Omba Arts Trust

Namibia

In Namibia, where one half of the population is unemployed, Omba Arts Trust works with over 600 artisans across the country to try to decrease unemployment and subsequent poverty through the sales of culturally significant yet contemporary jewelry made from recycled PVC pipe. Omba targets remote or marginalized groups, like the indigenous San, who are in need of job and education opportunities. Women, who are largely illiterate in Namibia, make up the vast majority of artisans at Omba. The organization trains them in craft and business, and provides information on healthcare and HIV, nutrition, and women’s rights.
